Gigi Hadid has an army of fierce fans who are always ready to come to her defense. When body-shaming trolls attack her online, her fans think nothing of stepping in and supporting their idol at all costs.
When some fans noticed that Gigi’s mom Yolanda appeared to have been caught on camera displaying problematic behavior towards Gigi over the years, they were once again ready to furiously defend her.
Yolanda Hadid has come under speculation in the past for a role she might have played in the break-up between Gigi and her ex Zayn, the father of her daughter Khai. This time, fans took issue with certain comments that Yolanda made toward Gigi when she was younger and just breaking into the modeling industry.
Keep reading to find out why fans are calling Yolanda Hadid “toxic” and “problematic” and have condemned her behavior towards Gigi.
Why Do Fans Think Yolanda Hadid Is 'Toxic AF'?
Fans of Gigi Hadid have created a series of videos that have been posted to YouTube referring to Yolanda Hadid as “toxic AF” and “problematic”.
Many contain the same footage, and the videos show clips of Yolanda seeming to encourage disordered eating habits in Gigi, who is a professional supermodel. The video also appears to show Yolanda perpetuating harmful gender stereotypes.
In one clip, as Gigi prepares for her birthday, she tells her mom that she’s excited about the food she’ll be eating with her friends. “Pretty much all the food that we’re eating is, like, a heart attack in a meal. But it’s going to be so good.”
Yolanda replies, “You can have one night of being bad. Then you gotta get back on your diet, though.”
She adds, “In Paris and Milan, they like the girls just a tad on the skinny side.”
The next clip shows Yolanda bringing in a cake at Gigi’s birthday party. As Gigi cuts the cake, Yolanda tells her, “This is the hardest, for being on our diet.”
Gigi tells her mom, “I have to have a bite [of the cake] for good luck, though.” While Gigi cuts a piece for her and Yolanda to share, Yolanda tells her that the piece that she’s cutting is “too big” and to cut “half of that” only.
The video also shows a younger Gigi telling Yolanda that she misses club volleyball.
“Volleyball is a very masculine sport,” Yolanda says to Gigi. Then in her master interview, she tells the camera that “[volleyball players] train for hours a day after school so their bodies are big and bulky.”
The clip then cuts back to Yolanda with Gigi, saying that she thought her daughter was “a lesbian” for wearing basketball clothes to school every day when she was younger, causing backlash from fans.
Fans of Gigi took to the comments to slam Yolanda, with one user saying, “And this ladies and gentlemen is how an eating disorder is born.” Another user commented, “Taking away something a person wants to eat on their birthday is just evil.”
“If she acts like this in front of a camera, I don’t want to know what she’s like when the cameras are off,” wrote another user.
Several other YouTube users shared their own experiences with toxic parents or disordered eating in the comments, expressing empathy for Gigi, who also suffers from the autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s.
What Does Gigi Hadid Eat In A Day?
The series of videos on YouTube have led fans to worry about Gigi’s health and wellbeing. But according to Mission Lean, the model generally follows a well-rounded diet with fruits, vegetables, and lean protein. The publication also claims that Gigi eats burgers and fast food in moderation.
On days that she’s having a photo shoot, Gigi reportedly sticks to light foods, like smoothies and salads. The publication also reports that Gigi loves salad.
In one of the videos slamming Yolanda Hadid, Gigi and Yolanda are shown walking together and Yolanda says to her, “It’s hard to exercise six days a week, and it’s hard to not eat any sugar, and it’s hard to have to eat salad every day, but you’re doing such a good job, Gigi.”
Does Yolanda Hadid Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?
Yolanda, who was once a supermodel herself, has been open with the public about her battle with Lyme disease, which also affects her daughter Bella and her son Anwar.
“I used to be a multitasking, single mother-of-three and social butterfly who, slowly, started to lose her magical powers,” Yolanda revealed in a 2021 interview cited by E! News.
“Like with many chronic diseases and mental health issues, the unfortunate truth is that you appear to be healthy on the outside, which is difficult for people to reconcile," she went on.
"It's much easier for us to have compassion for somebody with visible external symptoms. Most people still don't seem to believe that chronic Lyme disease even exists. As the saying goes: you don't truly get it until you get it."
Because of Yolanda’s health struggles, she has revealed that she mostly follows an organic diet and tries to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Fans of Yolanda have come to her defense following the reaction to the videos, claiming she has the best intentions for all of her children.
